Tobii, the company that makes eye-tracking technology, is unveiling an improved prototype version of its eye-tracking  hardware, which they called “Rex”, and it will be the first time consumers will be able to purchase the device. Tobii Rex is small enough to fit on your laptop or underneath your desktop monitor. What’s really interesting is that it allows you to navigate Windows 8 user-interface with your eyes and a single keystroke.

The hardware connects via USB to any Windows 8 PC and uses proprietary software that tracks your eyes. It requires one-time and a simple 30-second calibration that involves staring at a dot as it moves in the screen for Rex to automatically detect your eye movements. After the device is configure, you can simply look and launch an applications, scroll up and down, or zoom in on a map you are looking. Well, “looking” is just part of the process, you also need to hit a keystroke, or sometimes it’ll also requires the use of the mouse scroll wheel — but still, pretty impressive. The hardware connects via USB to any Windows 8 PC and uses proprietary software that tracks your eyes. You definitely can see number of applications for such technology, certainly not just for getting around Windows 8 a lot faster and having fun, but also think that it can help people with disabilities to control a PC with their eyes. The company will only be shipping Tobii Rex kit to developers for a price tag of $995 later this year, that way programmers can start creating their own apps that takes advantage of the eye-tracking hardware. There will be a (limited) consumer version, but there isn’t yet a ship date or a set price. If you’re thinking on replacing your mouse and keyboard, this piece of hardware is in the range of a very pricey, but like with any other new gadget, prices will eventually come down — or a least we hope.
